From Heart to Table: Volunteering for Change with Feeding the Gulf Coast

January 16, 2024

In the heart of the Gulf Coast, an organization stands as a beacon of hope and compassion, tirelessly working to address hunger and food insecurity in the region. Feeding the Gulf Coast, a non-profit dedicated to serving the community, has been a lifeline for those facing the challenges of hunger.

Feeding the Gulf Coast traces its roots back to 1981 when it was founded as the Bay Area Food Bank in Mobile, Alabama. Over the years, the organization has expanded its reach and evolved to meet the growing needs of the community it serves. Today, it operates as a crucial member of the Feeding America network, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization. With a commitment to alleviating hunger through the distribution of nutritious food, Feeding the Gulf Coast has become the cornerstone in the fight against food insecurity across South Alabama, South Mississippi, and the Florida Panhandle.

Earlier this month, a group of Adams Homes employees took the opportunity to venture out to the facility and volunteer throughout the morning and afternoon. We had the pleasure of sorting through thousands of donations and packing backpacks for children facing hunger. Feeding the Gulf Coast operates the Afterschool Meals Program, offering free meals to any child, age 18 and under.

Volunteering at the food sorting center and participating in the backpack packing initiative provided a firsthand understanding of the organization's commitment to addressing hunger comprehensively. Together as a team, we were able to sort over 4,500 pounds of food and pack 800 backpacks, this comes out to a TOTAL of 9,350 meals! In addition to the time served we have held an in-office food drive to further assist in the fight against hunger.

It has been so rewarding to work with Feeding the Gulf Coast over the past few years and we look forward to all of the volunteer opportunities to come! If you are interested in learning more about this life-changing organization, you can visit their website here!
