Tips for a fun and safe Halloween
If you are a pet parent and you are planning on celebrating Halloween with the help of your pets this year, here are some great tips for pet parents from the ASPCA.
Candy should only be given to trick-or-treaters. Chocolate and any candy containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can be dangerous for dogs and cats. If your pet ingests something toxic, call your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
Wires & Cords:
Make sure to keep any of your Halloween decorations with wires or cords out of reach from your dogs or cats. If your pet chews on a cord or wire they could risk cuts, burns, or life-threatening electrical shock.
Take caution with lighting your pumpkins with candles. Curious pets can run a risk of getting burned.
If you dress up your pet this Halloween make sure the costume is not annoying or unsafe for your pet. You do not want the costume to constrict your pet’s movement or hearing, or their ability to breathe, bark or meow. Also make sure your pets costume does not have any small, dangling, or easily chewed-off pieces they could choke on.
None Social Pets:
If your pet is not very social you should keep them in a separate area away from the trick-or-treaters. Lots of new strangers can be scary and stressful to your pet if they are not very social.
Make sure your pet has the proper identification. If your pet escapes or becomes lost the proper identification can increase the chances that your pet will be returned to you.
