Moving on a Tight Budget

If you are planning to move in the near future and are on a limited budget, here are tips to help cut costs.

Finding extra savings:alt

There are always different ways to find a little extra savings if you take the time to and are willing to make the effort.

If you’re moving on a tight budget than you’ve probably realized moving supplies aren’t cheap when you account for the amount you are really going to need for your move.  Here are some ways to cut costs.

Start by saving your old newspapers, magazines, big pieces of scrap paper (Ex. homework scrap paper, print paper with misprints or mistakes that you’re ready to discard, etc.) as well any other paper material you can utilize as packing material.

If you receive packages in the mail at your home or office, save the packing material.  If you plan ahead and allow yourself extra time to prepare for your move, all of these paper material items we come in contact with on a daily basis can be used to save some extra cash by using the materials items we’d typically discard.

If you cannot extend your budget to purchase enough boxes needed for the move or if you are looking for away to cut cost by not having to purchase boxes, try the old reliable option of checking with your local retail stores, grocery stores or any other place of business in your area who would receive regular shipments.

The store may be required to break the boxes down before giving them to you or the store may only have boxes that are already broken down available, but don’t sweat it or turn down the boxes, it’s nothing some good packing tape cannot fix.  Plus, you can receive and transport two or even three times as many boxes back to your home, if they are already broken down.

Need extra cash:

If you plan ahead and allow yourself enough time to go through all your personal items such as clothes, kitchen items, toys, furniture big and small, you will probably find some of the items you have you do not need or use anymore and that may not fit or work in your new home.  This is a great time to have a yard sale to shred unneeded items and in turn make some extra needed cash.  Plus, this can also help downsize the amount of items you will be moving which can save in the amount of packing material you will need and the size of the moving truck you will need, which amounts to even more savings.

Make sure to plan smart when having a yard sale.  Pay attention to the weather conditions the day of your yard sale.  Typically the weather conditions can determine the amount of traffic and customers who will attend your yard sale.

If you don’t have time to plan a yard sale try taking pictures of the items and posting them on a website like Craigslist, eBay, or even a consignment shop.
