Salsa seems to be the go-to summer dip! Especially, the fresh, home-made, right from your own garden salsa. Did you know that growing your own salsa garden indoors is super easy and doesn’t require much room? Imagine having fresh salsa all winter long!
The ingredients are simple
Tomatoes – Roma tomatoes are a good choice because of their slender, firm nature. A 3 or 5 gallon container placed in front of a sunny window or glass door is perfect.
Peppers – Early Jalapenos are a great medium heat pepper. Like tomatoes, jalapenos love the sunshine! Make sure to keep the soil moist. A 2 – 3 gallon container should work well.
Cilantro – Cilantro is very easy to grow and can be harvested rather quickly. A small flower pot in a window or even on a counter top is fine for cilantro. An added benefit is the wonderful aroma!
Onions – Mini Purplette are perfect because they grow smaller and faster than typical yellow onions. They can be potted on their own, or tucked in with the tomatoes or peppers.
Reap what you sow
The growing process is easy. In the larger containers, put rocks in the bottom to help with drainage, then fill with potting soil. Make sure you water often enough, about every 2 or 3 days or if the plants look dry. Cilantro grows the quickest and can be harvested in about 3 to 4 weeks. Everything else takes about 5 to 6 weeks.
Have fun with it! All these plants can be grown together or separately, so creating a beautiful potted vegetable medley can be fun. Create a design with the taller tomatoes or peppers in the center and the smaller onions and cilantro around the edge of the containers.
The directions for salsa could not be simpler. Once everything is harvested, just coarsely chop everything and mix it together. You may add a little salt and garlic powder to taste and squeeze the juice from half a lime over it. Give it all a toss and voila! Home grown, delicious salsa all winter long!
