Huntsville, Alabama – “The Rocket City”

altBeautiful Huntsville, the fourth largest city in Alabama, is the seat of Madison County. The city’s population was 180,105 in 2010, according to the US Census. The Huntsville metropolitan area has 435,737 residents spread out over Madison and neighboring Limestone Counties.

Huntsville is nestled in the hills on the northern bank of the Tennessee River. Its early economy was dependent on the cotton mills and railroad industry that flourished during the nineteenth century. The city had fallen into decline after the Great Depression when three chemical munitions plants were built on land adjoining Huntsville in order to supply the Army during World War II.

After the war, one of these facilities, Redstone Arsenal, was selected to be the site of ongoing US missile and rocket altdevelopment. Later, the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center came to Huntsville and played an important role in NASA’s moon landing program. NASA still employs the Center in work related to the International Space Station, and Redstone Arsenal continues to be involved in missile defense work.

For a relatively small city, Huntsville has an impressive economic infrastructure. More than 50 Fortune 500 companies operate here; telecommunications, military technology and engineering research are some of the top industries represented. The city hosts the University of Alabama in Huntsville, the largest university in the area. Forbes placed Huntsville ninth on its 2009 list of the World’s Smartest Cities.alt

The metropolitan area is beautiful, laid-back and gracious. There are 57 parks, including the 5,000 acre Land Trust of Huntsville and Northern Alabama, a preserve for the conservation of local trees, wildflowers and wetlands, and no less than seven private and public golf courses. The mild climate allows residents to take advantage of outdoor recreational opportunities most months of the year.
