Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, with an estimated population of 792,862 in 2013. The population of the greater metropolitan area is 2,335,358 – a testimony to the region's rapid growth since the 1980s, when financier Hugh McCall helped to make Charlotte into the major financial center it is today. Bank of America and the eastern division of Wells Fargo are both headquartered here. In fact, Charlotte is the second largest financial banking district in the United States after New York City.
Although steeped in tradition that dates back to before the Revolutionary War, Charlotte has evolved to become a thoroughly modern city, which Forbes ranked high on its 2013 list of the "Best Places in the United States for Business and Careers." It has been dubbed "The New Energy Capitol" due to the large number of energy sector companies based in the city.
Charlotte is an important area for higher education, home to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Charlotte School of Law, and Johnson and Wales University. Davidson College, one of the best liberal arts colleges in the United States, and Belmont Abbey College are located in the suburbs.
The seat of Mecklenburg County, Charlotte is located close to the South Carolina border. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with mild winters. Residents are just a short drive away from either the mountains or the beach, making Charlotte the perfect base for families who enjoy recreation. The city is also located close to Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, affording more opportunities for outdoor entertainment.
Charlotte has two professional sports franchises, the Carolina Panthers (NFL) and the Charlotte Hornets (NBA). It is also a major center for the motor sports industry, home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
